What a busy start to February! We began with unit on Dental Health and had a fantastic visit from Avon Dental Office's own hygienist - Gwen Seitz. She did an amazing job helping us learn how to take care of our teeth. Check out the mini- slide show under the Parent Information tab. Then, we did some cool experiments with an apple and some hard boiled eggs. (First, we learned that an egg and an apple each have three layers much like a tooth - enamel, dentin, and pulp. ) In the first experiment, we took an apple and made a hole much like a cavity might be. We've been watching it daily and it's not looking good! Then, we took some hard boiled eggs and put one in water, one in milk, and one in soda pop. We couldn't believe how awful the one in pop looked the next day! Then we brushed all of them with toothbrushes and toothpaste - we couldn't get the one soaked in pop quite back to it's original state. Since, they each had cracks in them and we were curious about what might happen to them - we put them back in their respective jars. The next day, we broke them open and look at the inside to see if the liquid solutions affected "the layers of our mock teeth;" again, the pop soaked one was not pretty! Science is so fascinating! There is so much to explore in the world!
