What a great day to be outside! We really enjoyed learning all about maple sap and how it is turned into maple syrup. We learned about the kinds of trees we get the sap from (sugar maples), we learned how big a tree has to be to tap it (at least 12 inches), we all got a chance to "drill" into the tree to tap it, and we all got to taste the sap (much like sugar water). It takes about 4 trees to produce about 30-40 gallons which is what is needed for 1 gallon of maple syrup! After we were done learning, it was a race to collect sap. Thankfully, despite the mud, we had no wipe outs! Then, we finally go to go into the Sugar Shack and learned how to transform sap into syrup. The best part came when we all got to taste the results of the hard work that goes into making it. Yum!
