What an awesome day! We've been learning about solids, liquids, and gases. Today we did an experiment with 3 glasses of water and compared them. We talked about how adding cold or heat might change them and made some predictions based on our prior knowledge. We put one outside, because we talk every day about how water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and we wanted to see what would happen now that the temperature has dipped below 32. (It froze!) Another cup we left sit on the counter. The third one we poured into a tea kettle and boiled. As we watched the steam rise we had an "AHA" moment of how water can be an invisible gas all around us and it also prompted a discussion about evaporation. Whew! By the time we were done, our heads were filled with science words! The kids loved it!!! Plus, the flag above the tea kettle started to move, which made us start talking about how heat can cause the air to heat up and hot air can cause things to move. It was wonderful to see the interest on everyone's face and to hear all the questions and comments. They didn't want to stop. "Experiments and science are fun!" (My class thinks so, anyway; and so do I.)
In addition to our matter experiment, we talked about koala bears, discovered where they live and learned some interesting facts about them, and did an art project about a koala. Sleep 18 hours a day and eat 5 1/2 hours a day; that leaves them 1/2 hour to play? Oh, to be a koala! We also spent lots of time reading, creating, writing, counting, and other daily activities. It's no wonder our day flies by so fast! Until next time, stay warm and enjoy your time together.

Can you believe it's already January 15th and the first month of the new year is halfway over!!
We started off our first day back by imagining ourselves living in a snow globe; the results were fantastic and we have an amazing display of "snow globes" hanging in our hallway. We also have spent a lot of time learning about My Plate and healthy eating. Ask your child what should be on their plate for a balanced meal. There are lots of ideas about My Plate on the internet. In addition to our regular studies, we've also spent a lot of time focusing on our counting by 1's, 5's, and 10's to at least 110. Lots of friends have told me they've been practicing at home - and it shows! Keep up the good work and practice, practice, practice. We've also spent a lot of time learning to blend letters and sounds, and using word chunks to read and create words. Wow! The things we have learned and the places we're going! Up next, Martin Luther King, Jr. and fostering peace and community. In math, we'll begin learning about 3-D shapes and reviewing the 2-D shapes; as well as, the following coins: penny, nickel, and dime. Until next time, stay warm and enjoy time spent with family and friends. |
