Today we started an experiment to go along with our Dental Health studies. We created a "cavity" in an apple and a potato by poking a hole in them, and now we'll wait to see what happens. Likewise, we'll wait to see what happens to our hard boiled eggs (aka teeth) that we put in water and the ones we put in a glass of pop. Hmmmmm…….our predictions that they will be rotten might happen. The egg already started turning brown after only 5 minutes. This will be interesting and students were super excited to see what happens tomorrow. One student even wanted me to stay overnight "to keep an eye on it." (Not sure it was a good idea - then again, I might be able to get caught up and make some of my piles disappear!) We also had some St. John's Prep students here today and they showed us how to make a homemade lava lamp with a 2 liter bottle, a bit of water, a lot of vegetable oil, some food coloring, and Alka Seltzer. It was awesome and we learned how water molecules bond like magnets and keep the oil and food coloring out, while the Alka Seltzer caused a bubbling effect. When we shone a light behind it it was so cool! We now have lots of scientists in the making!

Today we had a great presentation on healthy snacks from Penny Hoops, our Food Service Coordinator; along with a great tour of the kitchen, from Miss Nancy - a cook in our very own lunchroom! It was fun to see what is on the other side of the counter and the freezer sure was cold. We learned that about 400 school lunches are served everyday and that it takes about 10 large cans of fruit or applesauce or other foods to serve our school. We also had a chance to try two different kinds of hummus with carrots, cucumbers, and cauliflower; as well as, roasted garbanzo beans. Then, we topped our snacking off with a create -your -own yogurt parfait! Who knew education could be so delicious! Tomorrow we'll delve into the world of science and lava lamps! How much fun can we have in a week? Well, look at out Valentine's Day photos and that will probably tell you that kindergarten in a crazy, busy place where learning and fun abound. Plus, we followed it up the next day with a pajama party while we celebrated the 100th Day of school! Special thanks to our volunteers: Janica Jammes Larson, Jen Lecy, and Theresa Wimmer, for all their wonderful help with our Valentine's Day party. Next up, a Nutrition presentation by our Meal Coordinator, Penny Hoops; followed by a field trip to CSB to see Mr. Popper's penguins! There will also be some science experiments, a visit by St. John's prep students who will do a science experiment, we'll share 3D shapes we found in our homes, and we'll talk about heat, matter, light, and have a "S'more Reading event." Also, conferences start next week, which gives me another chance to visit with parents and share all the amazing things your children are doing. Thank you to Gwen Seitz for a great presentation on dental health! Also, thank you to Avon Dental for the great dental kits and fun packs. We will all work on keeping our pearly whites the best they can be! Today we learned how to use the QR reader on our mini-ipads to scan QR codes and read math problems and then solve them. The kids had a blast and didn't want to stop! Education can be so fun! We will also learn to scan QR codes for stories and dental health videos next. Things sure have changed since I was a kid - which wasn't that long ago. (Or was it?! When did that happen?) Anyway, we're sure enjoying kindergarten! |
